26Jul - Thurs
Alex arrived around 11 this morning, bearing a foam topper for the fold out couch (Dj & Matt will be much more comfortable, next visit!). He and Birdie had used it for their fold out but didn’t need it anymore. We did a bit of catching up; had some lunch and then I left him and Carman to discuss solutions for all world problems and headed out to do some retail therapy. It had rained all night and the forecast was for rain off and on all day, so I packed an umbrella in the backpack and headed out (you guess it, that kept the rain away).
I entered the College Park complex at Yonge & College and headed in to Winners to look for a couple of cool tops...not as in hip & cool, but if it’s going to stay so hot out I need more sleeveless tops! I found a couple and one or two extra items then headed underground to the PATH system. I needed a few more essentials from the Dollerama (one of my earrings broke, and they sell an ingenious 4-pack of tiny tubes of glue - so you use one and still have 3 that don’t get glued shut by the next time you need some super glue) then stopped at the Metro store for some fruits, veggies & bread. I came back above ground to discover the skies darkening, but still no rain fell on my way back home.

The boys were sitting just where I’d left them a couple of hours earlier but promptly pulled themselves together and headed to the Chicken & Firkin down the block to have a patio coffee. Alex has promised to make sure Carman gets a walk in on each of his visits and true to his word they had a gentle stroll to the Firkin, and shortly after their coffees were served it started to rain. the stroll home was much quicker as the rain intensified with every step they took! They were both a little damp and breathless when they arrived back at the apartment.
Kristy’s Mom, Susan, came for dinner so I tried the Podleski sister’s “Life in the fast loins” recipe from their new Looneyspoons Collection book - very yummy pork chops accompanied by some rosemary roasted potatoes and a black bean & corn salad. We enjoyed a great visit, comparing notes on supporting our people, finding ourselves displaced to Toronto (us from NB, them from Mtl) for an indefinite time and experiences to-date in the program. Things went very well until somebody’s daughter started texting that Mom was out past her curfew...and was she on her way home yet??
Gotta love a little bit of role reversal, eh Susan?

The basil plant that Krys & Brian gave us is doing very well in our east facing window...some sort of kismet there, we’ve come from the east and our temporary home faces east...
Supper tonight was most excellent Black Bean, Avocado (none of that green stuff in Carman's portion) and Corn salad (thanks Tania G for the reminder on how great this salad is!); Cranberry Orange Couscous and Old Bay seasoned Baked Tilapia...perfect with a glass of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio by the way :o)
