Up on the Roof

06Aug

Monday - we’re headed south (just several blocks south, that is) for a Rooftop BBQ & UNO Spin Rematch with Brad & Jess. Brad meets us at their building with a parking pass - the concierge has granted free parking for all New Brunswickers today - we couldn’t have planned this better! At the apartment door we’re given an extra enthusiastic tag wagging by Jess’ Shih Tzu, Griffin, who makes the rounds for pats and ear rubs. I found a stuffed bone for him on my trip to CT yesterday and he takes to it immediately, dragging it off to his bed for a little wrestling match.

We desperately seek out the Women’s Soccer match, but can find only water sports being broadcast from the Olympics! Finally at half-time, they switch to the game and Canada is leading! We were all sorely disappointed with the finish of the game, but more so with some of the one sided reffing that appeared to be going on... Both teams played hard (except for the dramatic injuries from which they miraculously rise from the field and run out to continue play) and there can only be one winner at the end of the game. A heartbreaking end to the game for Canada.

Time to head to the roof (to the BBQ patio on the 9th floor roof, not to the roof on the 22nd floor, thanks anyway!)...

Turns out that Tower is only
 2 feet tall!
It’s a spectacular day and we enjoy a visit while watching Chef Brad tenderly turn and slowly sear the sausages on the barbie until they are cooked to perfection!
Wait, is that him talking to the neighbours and ignoring our supper???

Within moments of us getting our plates appropriately loaded down, a bunch of beastly bees buzz in so we give up and head back downstairs.

We enjoyed our dinner in peace and then broke out the UNO Spin for a rematch of wits and tricks.

Hilarity ensues as the game reverses direction, skips turns, changes colour, orders you to pick up or put down cards and generally gets us all so confused we’re not sure what day it is. At first we put the confusion down to a lack of oxygen, but as Brad and I also succumb to confusion - we have no excuse and just laugh.

Did I mention that Jess is just a tad competitive? She is like a Chinese Athlete, singularly focused and well trained with only one goal in site - win!! She wins almost every UNO Spin challenge to the point we threaten to have her tested for spinroids!

She is in training for a transplant and plans to compete in the Transplant Games once her new blowers are installed - Go Jess!

Carman had an unbelievable run on one of the “draw til you get a red card” spins, in fact we taped him after a few minutes because he just couldn’t draw a red card...

Alas, even with our combined efforts to reverse around and skip over Brad, we just cannot break his winning streak and he took us to the cleaners!

this score for Carman was a result of his Red Card Draw

We had a marvelous time and truly wore out our welcome, staying until after 10:00!

New toy for Griffin, lots of fun for Brad

Got some great rooftop shots before we were driven indoors by the bees:

Looking north from Jess' building, our condo building is the round red brick one left of the smoke stack and in front of the Rogers Tower on the left sign. Although everything looks somewhat close we are 1.9 km away and the Rogers tower is 1 km away from us.

Tower, tower, tower, Spire

It really was such a great day. I haven't been able to laugh like that in a looooong time without it erupting into one never-ending coughing fit.
